Modak
Steamed Coconut Modak – A Traditional Ganesh Chaturthi Delicacy
Modak is a beloved Indian sweet, especially prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi, as it is considered Lord Ganesha’s favourite offering. These delicate, steamed dumplings are made with a soft rice flour shell and a fragrant coconut–jaggery filling. Light on the stomach and rich in flavour, modaks are a perfect blend of devotion and taste.
This traditional recipe uses simple ingredients commonly available in Indian grocery stores across Australia and can be prepared at home with ease.
Ingredients
For the Rice Dough
-
1 cup fine rice flour
-
1¼ cups water
-
1 teaspoon ghee
-
A small pinch of salt
For the Coconut Filling
-
1 cup freshly grated coconut
-
¾ cup grated jaggery (adjust sweetness as preferred)
-
½ teaspoon cardamom powder
-
1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
-
1 tablespoon finely chopped dry fruits (optional)
-
A pinch of nutmeg powder (optional)
Method
Step 1: Make the Coconut Filling
-
Heat a pan on low flame and lightly roast the poppy seeds until aromatic. Set aside.
-
In the same pan, add grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on medium heat, stirring continuously.
-
Once the jaggery melts and combines with the coconut, cook until the mixture thickens slightly.
-
Add cardamom powder, roasted poppy seeds, chopped nuts, and nutmeg. Mix well.
-
Switch off the flame and allow the mixture to cool completely.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
-
Bring water to a boil in a saucepan. Add salt and ghee.
-
Reduce the flame and gradually add rice flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
-
Cover and cook on low heat for 2–3 minutes.
-
Transfer the dough to a plate and allow it to cool slightly.
-
Knead the dough while still warm until it becomes soft and smooth. Keep it covered with a damp cloth.
Step 3: Shape the Modaks
-
Divide the dough into small equal portions.
-
Flatten each portion into a small circle, keeping the edges thinner than the centre.
-
Place a spoonful of coconut filling in the middle.
-
Gently pleat the edges and bring them together to form a pointed top. Seal properly.
Step 4: Steam the Modaks
-
Grease a steamer plate or line it with banana leaves.
-
Arrange the modaks with slight gaps between them.
-
Steam for 10–12 minutes until the outer layer turns glossy and slightly translucent.
-
Remove from the steamer and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
Serving Suggestions
Serve modaks warm as a festive offering or dessert. They taste best when freshly prepared and can be enjoyed plain or with a drizzle of ghee.
